Founding Partner of Dixon Walter, Alan has helped create a search consultancy designed to challenge recruitment norms and to promote expansive & innovative thinking techniques in recruiting step-change leaders in the education and not for profit sectors.

A social scientist by education, Alan has retained his passion for delivering societal benefits particularly in the education sectors through his endless curiosity about individuals and the contributions they can make as sector leaders in their fields of expertise. His career has spanned local government during the troubled 1980s, in management consultancy during the transformative 1990s and culminating in specialist senior recruitment services designed to recruit the very best talent for the rapidly evolving public and not for profit sectors.

With over 25 years public sector senior recruitment experience Alan has particular interest in higher education and has developed a unique approach to search focused on expanding horizons, delivering real diversity and encouraging a fresh perspective on senior university appointments in both academic and professional service functions.

Since creating Dixon Walter in 2015, Alan has recruited some of the sector’s most successful and diverse leaders through this progressive approach and has worked with all mission groups across the whole spectrum of university institutions nationally; often repeatedly and based on his particular partnership approach to search and selection.

A family man and father to two teenagers, Alan remains young at heart and when not recruiting university leaders is an active member of East Lothian’s sporting community. A marathon runner and part-time footballer Alan was also Vice-Chair and Head Coach for the local youth football team, a supporter of the highly successful local athletics club and is still trying (unsuccessfully) to reduce his handicap on Scotland’s ‘Golf Coast’
